The shoe department of almost every store has become so vast that it’s become hard to identify shoes that will actually work in your every day life. It almost seems as if many of the shoes are out of style by the time they make it out of the box.
Considering the price of footwear these days, even the biggest shoe addict would be hard pressed to purchase a new shoe wardrobe every year. It’s for this reason we decided to create a list of shoes that can be purchased today and worn for a decade. (Of course, your shoemaker will play some role in the longevity of your shoes but we’ll leave that part up to you.)
Our list encompasses almost every shoe need besides sneakers-- nobody should wear the same kicks for 10 years. We realize that most of these styles are quite expensive, but remember you are going to wear these shoes for ten years. Scoping out lightly used versions on eBay could dramatically defray the price. Searching eBay serves up extra bonuses as you may be able to find exclusive color options that aren’t always available at your local store.
1 Chanel Ballet Flat
The Chanel ballet flat is somewhat like a little black dress. They go with just about anything provided it isn’t too formal. Pair these shoes, which are comfortable as slipper, with everything from a sundress to a pair of leggings. Our favorite style is the two-tone beige with a black tip but you can’t go wrong with any of the Chanel ballet options.
2 Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane
Few people can forget when Sara Jessica Parker’s Sex and the City character cooed over the mother of all shoes the “Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane”. They aren’t an urban shoe myth and they are still as relevant today as they were 15-years ago. These shoes look especially good with work attire. Pair them with a chic pants suit or a shift dress to pull off an effortless polish.
3 Christian Louboutin Very Prive Platform Pump
If there were ever to be a power shoe, the Christian Louboutin Very Prive Platform Pump would fit the bill. The shoe instantly turns any article of clothing into stylish outfit. The red sole and red peep toe are undeniably Louboutin and forever classic. This shoe will never go out of style and will make you feel like a million dollars no matter what you have on.
4 Giuseppe Zanotti Flat Sandals
Most people identify Giuseppe Zanotti for their sky-high over-the-top heels but we are classic fans of the brand’s seasonal flat sandals. Every season the designer offers customers a summer flat that is the perfect choice for comfort and style. You can choose a pair with embellishments or opt for a more minimalistic version, but no matter what you choose you will come to love these summer basics.
5 Chloe Scalloped Flats
Nothing hugs your foot like supple nappa leather. Slip on a pair of Chloe’s iconic scalloped flats and it will feel as if you’re foot is cuddled in a plush pair of socks. The shoes come in a variety of colors, just don’t be surprised if you end up with more than one.
6 Givenchy Shark Lock Riding Boots
Every girl needs a pair of high boots and if you eliminate the heel you can just about live in a good pair of boots all winter long. We love the Givenchy riding boots with the shark lock. They are rugged enough to stomp through the snow but still have a feminine feel. Team them with a legging or skinny jean and wear a long coat to top off the look.
7 YSL Platform Tribute Sandal
If there were ever a heel you can wear all day long it would be the YSL Tribute sandal. These gravity defying shoes are the go-to footwear for every PR girl who needs to look great while spending 12-to-18-hours on her feet. We suggest starting with a nude pair and then branching out to additional colors once the addiction wears you down.
8 Prada Wedge
The wedge is likely the most underestimated style in the shoe category. It’s the perfect bridge between casual and dress up. When traveling, you can pack a comfortable wedge and need no other shoe. Wear your wedges with any shape jeans, a flirty day dress, a sexy nighttime dress, a skirt or bathing suit cover-up. Really, anything goes. We especially love cork or raffia for summer and wood for winter.
9 Azzedine Alaia Studded Booties
Designer Azzedine Alaia’s clothing and shoes are constructed to worship the female form. Although these studded shoes may seem trendy, they are a classic among those who love fashion. A woman who wears Alaia doesn’t follow trends, she sets trends. We love the zigzag motif with gold-tone studs. Pair these beauties with an Alaia body-con dress and every day will feel like your birthday.
10 Metallic Pump
Need to spice up a basic black dress or want to tone down an eye-popping ensemble? Look no further than a basic Metallic Pump. Almost every designer has their own version of these mirror shiny shoes. We love silver, gold and copper from Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Prada and J. Crew. Just remember that if your shoe is super shiny you should keep the
