How to Add Glitter to Your Shoes

While there are many shoes that help you make a splash at any event, a pair of glittery shoes ensures no one ignores you. Many designers have their own version of this glitzy accessory, but if you do not have the budget for Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo, then you can make your own pair at home. Adding glitter to any pair of shoes is easy, if you have the patience. Whether you are a proficient do-it-yourself enthusiast or even if you are hapless at crafts, you can still design your own glittery shoes with the right techniques and tools.

 

Method 1: Pre-Made Kits and Pens
There is a wide variety of glitter kits and pre-made products available on the market, and many manufacturers design these kits for fabric. If your shoes are made of canvas, such as Converse high tops or espadrilles, you can use these products. Check the exact directions on the kit you purchase, but most likely, it comes with an adhesive and a selection of glitter colors. Simply apply the adhesive on the shoes, and then add the glitter.

An easier way to add glitter designs to shoes would be to use glitter pens. These pens have the glue and glitter pre-mixed inside; simply squeeze it out onto the shoe's surface. These are easier to handle, especially if this is a project for young children, but take note that some pens are washable, which means that taking your fancy new shoes out in the rain could result in your glitter disappearing.

Method 2: Use Shoe Decals
Another easy method of adding glitter to your shoes would be through the use of decals or stickers. If you just want something shiny and glittery on your shoes, then use crystal pieces to create more distinct designs. For example, brides who want "something blue" on their wedding should add some small crystals to their shoes in their chosen design, such as "I Do."

Method 3: Do-It-Yourself
For the truly crafty, there is a way to make everything from scratch without buying pre-made kits or tools. Not only do you save some money doing everything yourself, but you also feel more accomplished once you finish this project. All you have to do it follow a few simple steps.

Step 1: Gather the Materials
You need an ample amount of glitter in your chosen color, all-purpose glue or one that works with your shoe material, some newspapers, painter's tape, and a brush. Of course, you should also find a pair of shoes you want to cover in glitter. Choose an old pair of shoes or an inexpensive pair, as you do not want to ruin a pair of pricey designer shoes.

Step 2: Prepare the Work Area and Shoes
Ideally, you want to work on a flat surface such as a table or workbench, and avoid carpeted floors. Take the newspapers and cover your tabletop or floor where you want to work. Then, use the painter's tape to cover up parts of your shoes you do not want to cover in glitter, such as the soles or heels. Additionally, remove laces, buttons, and other things that might get in the way.

Step 3: Mix the Glue and the Glitter
Take a small cup or tray and add about a quarter cup of glue, and then add the glitter. Take a chopstick or popsicle stick and stir it thoroughly.

Step 4: Paint the Shoe
Take your paintbrush and use it to apply the mixture to the surface of your shoes. Leave them to dry, and then add a second layer. Add a third layer if necessary. Allow the shoes to dry overnight in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Use a last layer of plain glue to seal the glitter, and make sure the shoes are completely dry before you wear them.
