Many of us are confronted with the issue of having an out of control wallet. When we hear the word ”essentials" we either think that means travelling on the bare minimum, or take the opposite route and assume that means everything we own being as such.
But how could we cut down on the amount of weight we carry around in our wallets? Surely there's a better way that having that old tatty brown wallet ripping a hole in your favourite jeans? Worse still, don't even get us started when it comes to having to wear a suit!

The first advice to be giving to someone who wants to pitch a bit of weight from their back pocket (and not to mention, making sitting down much more comfortable!) is to choose a slimmer version of your current wallet. Be that a zip-a-round, bi-fold, tri-fold or envelope, choose your tool then find one without extras, unwanted buttons and bulky zips. Step one complete.
For some reason I've always had a serious card situation going on in my wallet. If you took a peak inside my wallet a few months back you would have come across at least 3 debit cards and 4 credit cards. Granted, I do use a few of them, and it feels sensible to have a back-up on you, but surely I can leave a few at home without worrying?
My way of thinking has always been the same; if I've not got it to spend then I shouldn't be spending someone else’s. So that goes for all of those credit cards. Just carry what you'll need - a debit card, then a credit card for back-up, unless you're collecting air miles…?

Coins are tricky things. I've never been one of those people who is 100% comfortable without carrying a few spare coins around. They're handy for machines, tips at bars, and any quick emergencies. It always feels like bad practice to be putting 50 cents payments on your bank card too!
So for those who do like to carry a little spare change, but don't want to bulk out their wallet then I'd recommend picking up small coin holder. Don't worry about carrying it around in your pocket, just drop it in your bag - it will be there if you need it. There’s plenty of leather, canvas and rubber options.

We have a tendency to cling onto our old receipts like they're going out of fashion. There’s so much in there, but we bring it back to the "what ifs" and "it's there just in case", or "you never knows”…but rarely does the opportunity arise to use them again. And even if it do, will you need the recipe then and there? Most likely not.
An easy way of ridding your back pocket pal of all that unwanted paper is to start a simple filing system at home. Every receipts worthy of keeping gets filed away and recorded (especially big purchases, which is also great practice for anyone self-employed). Use a storage system or plastic files to keep everything organised.

By giving a little thought to what your day will look like you can significantly cut down on your daily carry. It can seem like hassle to arrange your wallet each and every day, when was the last time you used that coffee loyalty card from the town two city’s over? Try to only pack what you’ll need on that day. Another thing which takes up space is business cards, which we all pick up from meeting or travels; try to get into the habit of filing them away or logging the address then recycle the paper.
Use a separate business card holder to avoid any confusion.

“Not everyone carries a wallet”. If you said this to me just a year ago I'd have called you mad. I didn't think I'd ever leave the house without my wallet, until I started to use one of Bellroy's leather card holders. A basic card holder should be able to hold your essential card, but cleverly designed pieces like the ones that Bellroy offer are built to carry more, using less space. I can fit two cards on either side, plus two notes and a couple of business card in the middle compartment. There's plenty of options out there, it's just choosing the best for you.
