Is that $10 BCBG gown an awesome deal or is it hiding a huge problem? When out at consignment shops, thrift stores, swap meets, or yard sales, you may not have time to inspect every last thread on a garment. Here's a few tips that will help maximize your shopping time-
- Stay away from white! Understandably, pre-owned white garments are rarely perfect and often not worth the gamble. Black can be tricky too as it doesn't get more beautiful with fading.
- Make sure to engage all the fasteners, zippers, buttons, etc, especially if you don't try the garment on. Nothing is more frustrating than getting an item home and discovering too late that the zipper sticks halfway up.
- Check these notorious trouble spots for discoloration or wear: Neckline, Armpit, Crotch, Hem.
Keep in mind that some flaws are easily mended. Razors or de-fuzzing tools (check the laundry detergent aisle) are great for removing pilling on sweaters. Buttons can be replaced and small holes can be sewn with a few stitches. Holes in pockets won't matter if you never use pockets anyway. If the lining isn't in perfect shape but the rest of the garment is, it might be worth a go. Don't overestimate your tailoring skills though and buy an item you can't commit to mending! No one wants a closet full of broken clothes!
Stains can be tricky and of course there is never any guarantee a spot will come out. Some methods are tried and true- aerosol hairspray will take care of ballpoint pen on leather (but probably not suede); Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is AMAZING for bringing shoes back to life. When in doubt about a stain, don't buy unless you can afford to throw the item away if your efforts are unsuccessful.
Flawed clothing needn't be indiscriminately avoided however. Is there enough good fabric to use elsewhere, like perhaps for a throw pillow or head scarf? Can the garment be altered, say by taking off flawed sleeves or shortening the hem to avoid a stubborn stain or rip? (And is it worth your time and money to pay for alterations you can't accomplish yourself?) Some garments may be dyed to a more pleasing color, but be sure to check that the fabric is dye-able and do follow all proper dying procedures. (If in doubt, don't!)
To be sure, treasures abound in the pre-owned clothing world. Have a careful eye, be flexible, and you will be rewarded with some steals!
