The inhabitants of Whoville may be famous for their holiday cheer and one-of-a-kind noses, but their whimsical up-dos are what really steal the show. Towering tendrils and elaborate braid sculptures are all the rage in the snowflake city. Surprisingly, recreating Who hair that would make even Dr. Seuss proud is relatively easy. In fact, anyone can transform their bathroom into an upscale Whoville salon with just a few basic styling supplies and a step-by-step guide.
Prepare Hair
To achieve the authentic Who look, hair must be straight and long. Use a flat iron to straighten curly hair and spray thin hair with a small amount of hairspray to make it more manageable. If hair is too short, attach a fake ponytail or hair extensions beforehand. Brush the hair to remove any knots or tangles, then part down the middle to prepare it for the Who makeover.
Create Hair Tower
Who hairstyles reach for the sky, and one of the most important steps in duplicating a Who do is to create a hair tower on top of the head. This can be done without hairspray, but the look typically does not last as long and the tower may begin to lean.
Place Bottle on Top of Head
Divide hair into an upper and lower section by bringing a comb around the head right above the ear line. Use an elastic hair band to hold the lower half in place. The lower section of hair serves as the side braids of the Who hairstyle, while the upper section makes up the tower. Divide the upper half to create a front and back section. Place an empty plastic bottle or cup in between the two sections and bring the hair together to surround the object.
Lift and Gather Hair
Use a brush to lift the hair upward, ensuring that the surface is smooth and that the bottle or cup inside is completely hidden. Gather the hair ends on top of the object and secure with an elastic hair band. Make sure the hair is pulled tightly enough to create height, but not so tight that it causes discomfort.
Braid Hair
Remove the hair band from the lower section of hair, and then divide into a right and left section. Separate each half into three sections, then place a craft pipe cleaner in the middle section. Braid the hair around the pipe cleaner before securing with a small elastic hair band. Bring the end of each braid up to the sides of the hair tower and insert a bobby pin to hold in place. The braids should form the shape of a teardrop or half circle.
Curl Ends
Use a curling iron to curl the ends of the hair sticking out from the braids and the tower. For thin hair that does not hold a curl, add a bit of hairspray and let dry before twirling the strands around the curling iron. If there are still long pieces of hair dangling from the top of the tower, use foam rollers to create a tight curl.
Add Whimsical Accessories
Every Who has their own personality, and every Who hairstyle should have its own unique embellishments. Insert beaded hairpins into the side braids or top the tower with a sparkling bow. To make it quirky, carefully position fake birds along the hair tower and in the loop of the braids, or create a themed hairdo. For example, adding plastic candies and cupcakes and a pink bow on top can transform the look into a sweet treat. Even adding a touch of color by rubbing chalk or oil-based paints onto the hair can make it Whobilation-worthy.
