Choosing the right belly dance costume for you

I consider myself to be a novice belly dancer, I began belly dancing about a year ago and have loved every aspect of it. I have to say that my favorite part of this hobby are the costumes. It has been my pleasure to perform in a couple of student performances which gave me the opportunity to dress the part of the belly dancer.
The first place I looked to begin the journey of finding a costume was ebay. ebay has a very wide selection of costumes to choose from which is fantastic but can also be very overwhelming.

In my experience selecting a costume can be a very fun and potentially a stressful experience. Before starting your search you should consult with other people that you may be dancing with, if you are dancing in a group, to see if there is a certain color or a theme that you are going with. If not simply select a color that you like to narrow down the search. More often than not you will have to purchase your pieces individually and this gives you the opportunity to mix and match your colors. Typically you will need a top, a skirt/pants and a belt/hip scarf. Every dancer is different and has the creative power to choose what they will and won't wear. For example the costume pictured above is an item for sale on ebay that included the bra and belt, if the buyer would like to purchase the skirt they would have to do so in another transaction.
Often times there are many costumes that you can find under $50. More than likely these items will be shipped to you from overseas. Always check to see where your item is coming from and how long it will take to ensure that it will arrive on time for the event that you intend to wear it for. This shipping is why you should always begin looking for your costume as soon as possible.

When choosing your style of costume choose what is comfortable for you. If you love dresses and skirts great, if you would feel better wearing a pair of harem pants, go for it. There is not right or wrong answer.

As far as sizing goes, I like to purchase the top a tad smaller than my normal size to ensure that everything stays in place while performing. Some belts will come with velcro as the clasp, I suggest replacing that with metal clasp to make sure it stays in place. Replacing the velcro is also a good way to re size the belt if it fits you a bit large.

When making your final selection choose the costume that you love and can picture your self performing in. Your costume should make you feel beautiful.
